Girls’ basketball beat Moreau Catholic by 33 points on February 24 to advance to the NCS tournament semi-final.
The Cougars built a 16 point lead by the end of the 1st quarter. Junior guard Haley Van Dyke scored 11 points in the period.
Play was interrupted in the 2nd quarter by an injury to a Moreau Catholic player.
By the end of the half, Campolindo was on top 42-29.
The later stages of the game were drawn out with plenty of foul calls and free throws. According to point guard Ashley Thoms, the outcome was largely the result of visiting team’s sloppy play. “The whole game was basically based around who fouled the most, which was Moreau Catholic,” she said.
The Cougars ultimately prevailed, 89-56.
Head coach Art Thoms was pleased with his team’s performance. “We were very physical and rebounded very well,” he said. “We also played with a lot of effort and intensity.”
According to the coach, much of his squad’s success is the result of unselfish play. “One of the best things about our team is that the players understand their roles…basketball is the ultimate team game,” he explained.
“I think knowing that we were the higher seed, we just had a bigger advantage over them,” added Ashley Thoms.
“Our chemistry, and how we are together, and how long we’ve known each other, and like the bond the whole team has, I think sets us apart from most other programs [teams],” said Aubrey Wagner.
