Golf Just Misses State Berth

Boys’ golf placed 4th in the NorCal tournament on May 19, just 1 place shy of a state championship berth.

Dublin High School, who finished behind the Cougars by 1 stroke the week prior, claimed the final state qualifying spot.

“It was a disappointing finish,” sophomore Austin Fischer said. “The course was pretty hard, but our team didn’t play as well as we should’ve, and we didn’t quite get there.”

According to Fischer, the golf team had never participated in the NorCal tournament before. “It was just disappointing because we knew we could’ve made it to state,” he said.

“It’s the best result that a Campo golf team has ever had,” coach Steve Robinson said. “We are disappointed, but proud.”

“[Monday] was pretty memorable, knowing that no other Campo golf team has gotten there,” Fischer added.

Senior Jim Coon qualified for the individual state championships on June 4, according to Robinson.

“We were just excited and worked really hard,” Fischer said. He also attributed the team’s season success to their 4 seniors. “They were really fun to have on the team, and they were really positive to all the other players,” Fischer said.

Looking ahead to next year, Fischer thinks that Robert Young and Will Lago will step up. “I think they’ll be big factors in our success,” he said. “We have a pretty good group coming back.”
