Boys’ varsity volleyball finished an undefeated league season with a 3-0 win over Miramonte on May 5, establishing themselves as the team to beat heading into the NCS playoffs.

“We’re always excited to get a W, no matter how you get it,” said coach David Chen.

Prior to the game, the team recognized seniors Grant Larsen, Kyle Davis, Ryan Nagle, and Jacob Pappa.  Part of the senior night tradition is letting the seniors pick the starting lineup for the game.

“We wanted to give the seniors as much opportunity to play as possible,” said Chen.

“It was fun allowing the seniors to pick our own lineup,” said senior Kyle Davis. “The coach doesn’t let us do that more often because I don’t think we’d win as many matches.”

Campolindo won all 3 sets against Miramonte, who struggled to defend against the Cougars, especially in the final 2 matches.

Chen attributed the Cougar’s success against their rivals to consistency on the coaching staff and a strong core group of athletes. “Miramonte has struggled to keep consistent coaches,” said Chen. “We’ve been very fortunate to have talented players.”

The varsity boys’ were confident heading into the match given the Matador’s losing record of the last few seasons. “They’ve only won 2 games in the past two years,” said senior Jacob Pappa. “We expected to win.”

The squad feels good about its chances in the post season.

“I expect us to win in NCS and go on to NorCal,” said Pappa. “Northgate and Las Lomas could provide some strong competition though.”

This game marks the last regular, non-playoff game for the 4 departing seniors, with the 1st playoff game set for May 10.
