Season Wrap: Szeto 2nd at NCS Golf Tourney

BASEBALL

With a league record of 4-8, varsity baseball advanced to NCS. The team won games against St. Joseph Notre Dame and Cardinal Newman before losing to Alhambra in the semifinal on May 21.  Sophomore Justin Liang said, “I thought we had a great season. We didn’t get as far as we wanted to as a team but we had a great experience and we bonded well as a team and will get em’ next year.”

BOYS GOLF

Varsity boys’ golf finished 8th out of 20 in the NCS tournament, with sophomore Baron Szeto leading with a 2nd place individual finish. Szeto went on to compete in Norcals on May 20, though he did not advance to the state tournament. “I thought the season went really well and I thought we played really well as a team going into the playoffs. It is too bad that we weren’t good enough to make Norcals,” said Szeto.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Despite their record of 5-3 in the league, girls’ lacrosse lost in the 1st round of NCS to Granite Bay 20-7 on May 7. The team did not qualify for the CIF Norcal tournament. Senior Elise Zur said, “I definitely think it was a great year because we were all really close as friends. It took us a little bit to figure out how to play as a team but once we got there we really saw our true potential. I am excited to see what they can do in the future.”

SOFTBALL

Girls’ softball was eliminated by Sonoma Valley in the 1st round of NCS tournament, 15-5, on May 14. The team ended its season with a 6-4 league standing and defeated rival Miramonte both times they were matched up. “Even though we lost I still think we communicated well as a team and I am hopeful that we will advance further through the tournament next year,” said sophomore Kira Jamgotchian.

SWIMMING/DIVING

The varsity swim team had a successful regular and post-season, with the girls’ squad placing 2nd in NCS, behind Monte Vista. The boys overtook San Ramon Valley it win the section title. The girls finished 6th and the boys placed 11th at the state championships. Junior Maddie Smith set a school record in the 200 IM and sophomore Channing Hanley set the school record in the 100 breaststroke. Sophomore Maggie Buckley is sad to see the seniors graduate. Josiah Klock won the boys’ NCS diving title while sophomore Daniel Zabronsky placed 7th, and junior Haley Tang finished 16th.

BOYS TENNIS

Although boys’ varsity tennis was co-champions of the Diablo Athletic League, the team was not selected to compete in the NCS Division 2 tournament. Despite the disappointing end to their season and the loss of 4 seniors, the team is hopeful to get a chance to compete in the NCS tournament in their 2020 season.

TRACK

The girls’ track & field team finished 2nd at the NCS Meet of Champions. Senior Maddie Doane finished 2nd in the 200m and 400m races. Juniors Alicia Hober  and Paloma Hancock finished 5th and 6th, respectively, in the 1600m. The girls’ 4 x 400 relay finished 3rd. At the State Championships on May 25, Doane improved her school record in the 400m to 55.52 while the relay squad moved to 2nd all-time in the Campolindo record book.  Junior Paloma Hancock said, “I am really proud of everyone. Everyone really pulled through [for NCS] and demonstrated their hard work and what a great season it was.”

The boys’ track & field post season was highlighted by a state championship qualifying effort from Edward Buckley in the 3200m at the NCS Meet of Champions.  Buckley’s time is the 4th fastest ever run by a Campolindo athlete.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Despite having lost to Acalanes 3 consecutive times during the regular season, the varsity boys’ volleyball beat them 3-1 during the NCS semi-finals on May 7. The team went on to win the NCS title on May 9, defeating Northgate 3-1. The Cougars were defeated 3-0 in the 1st round of the CIF Norcal tournament by Bellarmine College Prep on May 14.
