Mindy Luo
Since sophomore Mindy Luo was 7 years old, she has pursued her passion for art by participating in nation-wide drawing tournaments, including the Congressional Art Competition.

The Congressional Art Competition is a government-run event that flies the top contenders to Washington D.C. to hang up their art in the US Capitol. "It's really cool because they put up your painting for a year, so everyone in Congress has to look at your art," said Luo.

Although Luo was one of the youngest in her division, she won 1st place. "I was really surprised that everyone else was a junior or senior, and I couldn't see any other freshmen," she said.

Luo's painting depicted a black-haired girl wearing sunglasses. "To win, you had to paint something political, so mine was based on the theme of acceptance and diversity," she explained.

"I would say I am pushed most by my art teacher," Luo added. Artist Susan Gi, founder of an art studio in Richmond, has been mentoring Luo since she was 6 years old.

Luo hopes to enter in more competitions in the future.
