A Girl Scout since she was 4 years old, senior Dianda Giles serves her community through her troop 32300 and aims to achieve the Gold Award, the highest medal a Girl Scout can earn.

"I know what I want to do, I want to do something regarding environmental science because the whole premise of the Gold Award is to give back to your community," said Giles, "especially now [with] climate change because I think its really important."

Her troop is one of the only ones in Orinda for high schoolers. After saving and fundraising for over 2 years, they have finally earned enough to make a group trip to Mexico for next summer. "That's what I spend most of my time doing: Girl Scouts," said Giles.

Last summer, she was a counselor for Diablo Day Camp, earning about 80 hours of community service by working there. On the last day, she was so exhausted when she saw a girl playing with a feather, "I was like, 'hey, put that bird leaf down!' and they were like, 'what did you say?' and it was pretty embarrassing," she said.

Although in the end, it was still "fun," said Giles.
